What is Saw Palmetto

The old adage is “a dog is a man’s best friend.” If you were to talk to men over age 50, that saying may be changed to “saw palmetto is a man’s best friend.” Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is an incredible herb for treatment of prostate enlargement, often known as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). This common condition affects 50% of men older than 50-and close to 90% of men in their 80s have a problem with BPH. Youth is no guarantee of immunity, however. Nearly one out of every 10 men between the ages of 25 and 30 have BPH. Common the signs of prostate enlargement include:

  • Require to urinate more frequently, especially at night
  • Delay in urination
  • Slow stream of urine flow
  • Incomplete emptying of the bladder
  • Increased incidence of prostatitis (prostate infection)
  • Increased incidence of bladder infections

The prostate is a walnut-shaped gland located underneath the bladder. It surrounds the neck of the bladder and encircles the urethra (the passageway from the bladder, through the penis). If the prostate gland begins to enlarge, it puts pressure on the bladder wall, urethra, and the sphincter muscles that control the flow of urine out of the bladder, hence, the increased difficulty with urination. Since the flow of urine is impeded, there’s a greater probability of infections.
